Dominic Calvert-Lewin has revealed which of his Everton teammates makes the most mess in the dressing room.
Football dressing rooms can be cluttered and chaotic, and according to striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, this is the case at Everton.
In a recent Q&A on Kick, Calvert-Lewin was asked who the “messiest” Everton player is. The 26-year-old said, “I sit next to Andy Lonergan, and if he was here he’d say ‘I’m the messiest’, and I’m sat here saying he’s the messiest. He’s a shambles.”
Andy Lonergan is a back up player at Goodison Park. The 39-year-old goalkeeper has not made a single competitive first team appearance since joining Everton in 2021. He has previously had spells with Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, and Everton’s Merseyside rivals Liverpool, amongst numerous other clubs.
Lonergan has made over 400 club appearances to date, in a playing career that has lasted well over twenty years. However, he is very unlikely to ever make it onto the pitch for the Toffees. Jordan Pickford is Sean Dyche’s undisputed first choice between the sticks, and further back up is offered by Joao Virginia.
Everton walking defensive depth tightrope
Losing Pickford to injury or suspension for any length of time this season would be a disaster for Everton. The 55-cap England international is a vital player for the Toffees, and Dyche does not have enough proven and reliable strength in depth to effectively cover for his absence.
Everton made bolstering their attacking contingent their priority in the recent summer transfer window. The likes of Beto, Arnaut Danjuma, and Jack Harrison were all brought into the club to help ease the goalscoring burden on Calvert-Lewin.
However, the only defensive addition came in the form of 38-year-old full-back Ashley Young who arrived on a free transfer. Everton’s lack of depth between the sticks and in their defensive contingent could prove disastrous if fitness fortune isn’t in Dyche’s favour this season.
