Everton defender Tarkowski names one flaw in his game he must improve

James Tarkowski is aiming to become a more regular goal threat for Everton.

Everton centre-back James Tarkowski got on the scoresheet as Everton recorded their first Premier League win of the season so far against Everton on Saturday.

Tarkowski, alongside midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, provided the goals that finally got Everton a much-needed Premier League victory.

This result will take some of the pressure off of manager Sean Dyche and gives the Toffees a platform to build on.

Tarkowski himself is now aiming to kick on and improve his own game. The 30-year-old defender is keen a make goalscoring a more regular feature of his performances. Given his aerial prowess, there is no reason that the £100,000-a-week player shouldn’t be a reliable threat from set-piece situations.

Tarkowski addressed this ambition after the win against Brentford. As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, the twice-capped England international said, “with a head my size, I should be heading the ball like that! Nice to score a goal but we’ve been threatening this for a while and it was about time we put the ball in the back of the net and got the win.”

“I often say I need to be more threatening in the opposition box. I feel like I get my head on a lot of things in our box but don’t cause as many problems in the other box.”

Tarkowski aiming to add new dimension to his game

Even for a defender, Tarkowski does not have an impressive goalscoring record. In his 47 appearances for Everton to date, he has found the back of the net just twice.

Given how much focus Dyche puts on set-pieces, there is no reason why Tarkwoski shouldn’t become a regular threat in these situations. He is strong in the air and willing to battle and grapple for space.

Tarkowski produced a fine all round performance against the Bees. As well as contributing a crucial goal, he was also excellent defensively, making a number of decisive interventions at the back to frustrate the Brentford attackers.

As a club, Everton must now kick on from this victory, and really get their season going. The Toffees must convert this performance into a spell of good form that can guide them away from the relegation zone.
