Everton were once again profligate as their squandered chances came back to bite them yesterday.
Despite Jarrad Branthwaite’s stunner providing the difference as they entered added time, chances had fallen to Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto to kill off the match and secure a vital three points.
However, a remarkable goal-line intervention prevented the midfielder, and an absence of quality thwarted the Portuguese marksman.
Then, even after Lewis Dunk had headed home a heartbreaking equaliser, Jack Harrison lacked late composure to at least threaten the Brighton and Hove Albion goal.

It is this lack of finishing which continues to plague the Toffees, and now Stephen Kelly has explained the outstanding issues which start with Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
What Stephen Kelly said about Dominic Calvert-Lewin
As the main striker, the 26-year-old’s job is to score goals.
However, under Sean Dyche, Calvert-Lewin is so much more than that. He runs, presses, challenges for headers and creates for others.
So many expect him to be able to do all that, relentlessly running into the channels, whilst also being in the middle to tap in chances. It is no wonder that these golden opportunities keep falling to Beto late on in the match, when he is not required to cover as much ground as his English teammate.
Despite that, BBC pundit Stephen Kelly suggests the club need more, whilst also appreciating the tricky position the forward finds himself in.
He told Football Daily: ‘When you have centre forwards… the thing is he offers more than just goals and I know that because of his running ability, he puts teams under pressure, but you need goals. You need someone that’s going to score.

‘They’re not conceding loads, I think Pickford still is pulling off loads of shots, defensively they’re a little bit more open, but if you don’t have someone that’s going to get you goals, or looks like they’re going to be even on the goal trail, it’s going to be an issue.’
Everton so desperately need goals
After just 26 Premier League games this campaign, the Toffees have scored just 28 goals.
That is an abysmal figure, and one which justifies frustration from the fanbase. They understandably want much more, but given the precarious nature of their current situation, they frustratingly cannot get much else.
After all, this is a squad sorely lacking quality and confidence, and despite forging 44.01 expected goals, they just cannot muster up that killer instinct.
As such, Calvert-Lewin is actually the division’s worst finisher statistically.

However, his is an unforgiving role, and whilst he has squandered many chances this season, it is hard to remain sharp when he gets them so sparingly.
Perhaps swapping his role with Beto for a game or two, allowing him to come off the bench against tired legs, might see him benefit from he chances that the former Udinese ace continues to miss.
