‘Absolute madness’… talkSPORT pundits fume on air as Everton face new PL sanction

Given the reaction to Everton’s initial breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, another might push fans and the media over the edge.

After all, for just a £19m overspend they were handed a brutal ten-point deduction last time out, which fortunately they managed to overturn.

They might not be so lucky this time around, with reports having emerged suggesting they could be in serious danger of breaching yet again.

Whilst the punishment for such an outcome is still unconfirmed, the reaction has been immediate and emphatic.

Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist are two of the most vocal condemners of the decision already, who spoke earlier this morning live on talkSPORT (06:23 am, 15/01/23).

What did Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling say about Everton’s PSR breach?

The former first noted: ‘I’m not really sure what more they have to do. They’ve sold some of their big names and haven’t really brought anybody in, so what more do they have to do?

‘You know the daftest thing about all of this? If there is a charge against any of the clubs and then there is an appeal, the final decision on any sanctions won’t be made until 24 May, five days after the end of the Premier League season.

‘So we could finish the Premier League season not knowing their fate, and potentially which decision they’re in. I assume a points deduction would be imposed this season… If they’re found in breach they’ll have breached the rules this season, so any penalty will apply this season.’

Well, his Scottish co-pundit replied in kind: ‘Well, that’s absolute madness. You could then have a season where Everton or Forest could finish two or three points outside of the relegation zone and still get relegated.’

Would Everton get relegated with another points deduction?

Whilst it is impossible to give a certain answer on how Everton might perform in the face of such added adversity, it is easy to speculate given we have already witnessed how this group of players can react to the unthinkable.

After all, upon receiving word of their ten-point deduction, which plummeted Sean Dyche‘s side down to the joint bottom of the table, they would soon win four matches on the run to storm back to safety.

To receive another ten-point deduction, which would surely be the harshest possible sanction, it would actually only send the Toffees nine points adrift.

Whilst daunting, it is more than assailable should they enjoy another run akin to the aforementioned one.
