Everton are set to find out the verdict of their appeal against their 10-point Premier League deduction next week.

The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for several top-flight clubs, with Manchester City and Nottingham Forest also waiting to learn their fates, having been charged with Financial Fair Play breaches.

The Toffees’ charge dates back to 2019 when the club surpassed the £105 million loss limit during a three-year period.

Financial Fair Play has become a hot topic in recent years, and it’s no surprise to see some of England’s biggest clubs in hot water.

Speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast this week, Alan Shearer has called for the rules to be changed.

Alan Shearer calls for FFP change as Everton verdict nears

Conveniently, Shearer has urged the authorities to change the rules due to Newcastle United’s new-found spending power being held back.

United CEO Darren Eales has admitted the Magpies could be forced to sell their star players to comply with the rules moving forward.

“It’s just the nature of the beast. If you trade players on, it creates more headroom,” he said (via ITV).

Now, Shearer has weighed in on the FFP argument after being questioned by host Gary Lineker.

Lineker said: “With FFP holding Newcastle’s spending power back if they were forced to sell either Bruno or Isak in the summer to allow further investment, which would you choose to go if you were in charge?”

Shearer replied: “Don’t ask questions like that! They might have to, you know, depending on what happens; I think those rules will be changed pretty quickly.

“They just don’t work, and they are outdated. Too many are complaining that they just aren’t right.”

He added: “But if they didn’t change, then I imagine Newcastle would have to sell a big hitter somewhere along the line.”

Everton’s points deduction could be halved

There is hope for the Everton, with the verdict of their appeal set to be revealed next week.

Talking to iNews, Dr Rob Wilson expects their deduction to be halved on appeal, significantly boosting Everton’s survival chances.

“I fully expect the points deduction to be halved on appeal,” he said.

“I think they will be looking at a four to six-point deduction. Principally, this is because it sets a huge precedent. £24.5m or so [over the limit] over three years is not huge.”

If Everton’s deduction were halved, they would move up to 15th place, level on points with Brentford.
