Alex Iwobi has now sent a one-word message to Everton teammate Ashley Young after the debutant’s impressive display last weekend.

Young turned out in Everton blue for the first time last Saturday and scored the winning goal as the Toffees beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 in a friendly at the DW Stadium.

It was an overall impressive display from the £50k-a-week veteran, who joined on a free transfer from Aston Villa last week.

Taking to Instagram following his Everton debut, the 38-year-old posted: “First pre-season game done. Good few minutes in the tank and always nice to get on the scoresheet!

Found my shooting boots after hitting poor kid in the warm up with a wayward shot (hopefully you getting my shirt was enough of a sorry). Onto the next one. You away fans.”

In response to Young’s post, Everton teammate Alex Iwobi commented: “Playa!”

Everton may have surprise attacking option in Young, but must still reinforce striking options

Young took his debut goal for Everton very well, displaying the kind of composure that was sorely lacking throughout last season.

Taking the ball on his chest, his left-footed volley was blocked by the Wigan defence, but the former England international fired the ball into the roof of the net at the second attempt.

Versatile and experienced, Young could prove to be a very shrewd signing by Sean Dyche and displayed during Saturday’s victory that he is still capable of playing a more attacking role with great effect.

Indeed, he could well play a part in Everton’s new look forward line, alongside fellow summer recruit Arnaut Danjuma, who joined the Blues on a season-long loan from Villarreal.

The Toffees must still invest in at least one new centre-forward this summer, but after a stuttering start to the transfer window, they appear to have landed two smart recruits.
