Allan reveals the ‘frustrating’ thing about having to make 2022 exit

Everton, in an effort to progress under every manager that Farhad Moshiri appointed, largely spent big.

Some deserved that backing, and others did not, but in the end it was not for the want of trying to move the club forward.

The Iranian was merely misguided, and, on one particular occasion, sorely let down.

After all, in Carlo Ancelotti, he seemed to have hit the jackpot. Who wouldn’t put all their eggs in his basket?

Tempting him to Goodison Park alone was a mind-blowing feat, made even more insane by the players he would bring with him.

One such name, in Allan, has now revealed the strong bond he formed despite only spending two years in Merseyside.

Why did Allan leave Everton?

Having joined for £21m as part of Ancelotti’s 2020 summer rebuild, the Brazilian enforcer had previously starred for his Napoli side and was a keen favourite of the legendary tactician.

With unparalleled energy and the ability to pick a pass, he was unlike anything seen at Everton for years despite his adversity towards scoring.

However, his stay was to be short-lived, likely for similar reasons for Ancelotti’s earlier departure.

The finances no longer made sense, and his exit to Arab Emirates club Al Wahda was ratified in 2022.

Now, speaking to Everton again, the 33-year-old has outlined his sadness with the decision, as someone who remains a keen Evertonian nearly two years on.

He claimed: ‘I have great memories, all of my family does and probably because of that there were a lot of tears when we had to leave.

‘They were very, very sad. But this, in the football world, has to be the way. Unfortunately, there is no other choice.

‘Everton is a different club from anything I have experienced. When I arrived, the people were very, very welcoming and, honestly, I immediately felt at home. Also the fans and Goodison Park, they are so, so amazing.

‘My frustration when I look back is not being able to enjoy that love the Evertonians show for the Club for a longer period of time. That is so frustrating, honestly.

‘My goal was always to spend three, four or five of my best years at Everton because I loved the atmosphere that exists at the Club, but we fell into a bad moment and it meant that wasn’t possible. This is football. A lot of things can change in a short space of time and I had to move on.’

How good was Allan for Everton?

It is hard to quantify Allan’s importance to Everton across his two-year spell at Goodison Park, because the bulk of his work went largely unnoticed.

However, it was his tireless spirit in the engine room that endeared him to the fanbase, and I’m sure many fans would take him back today were it on a cut-price deal.

His debut term in the Premier League saw him shine though, with his 86% pass accuracy indicative of his metronomic qualities. That figure would make him the most accurate passer in today’s squad.

Then, he would blend that with a creativity and steel, managing 0.8 key passes, 3.3 tackles and one clearance per game, via Sofascore.

Allan was the quintessential Toffees midfielder: short-sleeves, short socks, no gloves, all-action. With his quality and steel combined, it was a shame to see him leave as soon as he did.
