Amadou Onana has cast some doubt on his long-term future at Everton.

Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana has recently given a very noncommittal answer when quizzed about his long-term future at Everton.

Onana is a key figure at Goodison Park. The 22-year-old has started all eight of the Merseyside outfit’s Premier League matches so far this season. He brings physicality and tenacity to the midfield zone for Sean Dyche’s side and has the capacity to influence the game at both ends of the pitch.

The eight-cap Belgium international’s potential is not in doubt. He has all the raw attributes needed to develop into an elite level player. It is therefore unsurprising that other Premier League clubs have been credited with an interest in prising him away from Everton.

As reported by The Guardian, Manchester United made an approach for Onana in the recent summer transfer window. However, that advance ultimately came to nothing, and the player remains at Goodison Park.

Onana vague about future plans

That does not mean his future is settled, though. The Toffees will be expecting further offers for the player to come their way in the upcoming January and summer transfer windows.

Everton will likely remain reluctant to let the £33 million former Lille man go, however, Onana’s own wishes will hold a great deal of sway.

To that end, in an interview with Belgian publication Sudinfo Sports, the £100,000-a-week midfielder was recently asked if he sees himself staying at Everton throughout the whole remainder of the current campaign. He replied, “that was my goal at the start of the season. But like I said, I don’t have a crystal ball. I am not able to tell you what will happen in the future. For the moment, I remain 100% focused on my performance on the pitch. This is what will determine my future and that of the club.”

Dyche should do all he can to convince Onana to stay at Everton. If they can keep him on the books, then the 6’4” powerhouse could well go on to become a real star for the club. Whether their resolve to retain his services will be tested in January remains to be seen.
