Amadou Onana now gives honest transfer admission on Everton future

Everton have had to be shrewd in the transfer market given their financial constraints, yet Kevin Thelwell saw fit to make an exception with Amadou Onana.

Having seen Anthony Gordon and Richarlison both depart in back-to-back windows, without really spending to replace them, the Toffees had accumulated a small fortune, albeit they were unlikely to reinvest it all.

A narrow escape from the drop had called them into action, and prying the Belgian maestro from West Ham United’s clutches outlined the continued pull they boast even with their well-documented struggles.

His £33m price tag looks like a smart investment now given the potential fees being touted for his Goodison Park departure, although the 22-year-old has now assured fans that he remains firmly focused on the Merseyside outfit.

Speaking to Transfermarkt, the former LOSC Lille star would detail the interest held in him, but remained staunch in his loyalty: ‘Clubs came knocking, but I wanted to stay to develop further and become a top player at Everton, perhaps the best.’

How is Amadou Onana playing?

Whilst last season marked a true baptism of fire for the nine-cap youngster, it has seemingly done wonders for his acclimatisation to English football, hardening him in arguably the toughest environment the Premier League can offer.

He remained imperative in their push for survival, and yet has taken his talents to new heights this campaign as an ever-present member of Sean Dyche’s setup.

Assuming a role just in front of the back four, he screens the defence with expert poise for someone so young, yet boasts the technical quality and physical dominance to thrive elsewhere on the pitch too.

As such, he has created four big chances already this season whilst averaging 0.7 key passes, 2.5 tackles and 6.5 ball recoveries per game in the league, via Sofascore.

Creatively competent yet defensively imperious, the sky truly is the limit for Onana, who seemingly gets better with each passing week.

Should he learn to truly exert his will and talent in every game for Everton, there is no telling how far he might rise. The only hope is that he sticks by his word, and takes his club along for the ride.
