Amadou Onana has created his own hashtag that he uses regularly on his social media posts.

Speaking to The Athletic, the Everton midfielder explained that it is his way of saying ‘look at me now’.

Amadou Onana came through four different youth academies before eventually joining Hamburger SV in 2020.

The Belgian became a regular in the German second division, and it was only a year later that he earned himself a move to Lille on a five-year deal.

Onana made 43 appearances for the French club, including nine appearances in the Champions League. His impressive form for Lille soon caught the eye of Everton, and he was on the move again.

The 22-year-old was thrown in at the deep end during his first campaign at Goodison Park, but he was heavily praised and ended up being linked to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Onana didn’t start the current season off quite as well and was subject to a lot of criticism as the Toffees endured defeat after defeat.

However, he has managed to turn his form around in recent months and was a key part of Sean Dyche‘s plans prior to picking up an injury in November.

Onana has had a very difficult path to get to where he is, but he’s revelling in his success now and has even created the hashtag #MakeThemShutUp, to silence the doubters.

“It’s (the hashtag) my way of saying, ‘Look at me now’,” he told Patrick Boyland of The Athletic.

“I’m the only one who believed in myself. Growing up as a young player, people doubted me, saying I wasn’t good enough and was never going to make it.

“They said (at Zulte), ‘I don’t even know why you want to go on trial to Hoffenheim if you’re not going to play here’. It’s crazy — why would you do that? As a teenager, it hurts because you’re not mature enough to understand certain aspects of life.

“But I thought, ‘If it’s not working in Belgium, let me try somewhere else’. If you’re a Ferrari in a garage full of s***ty cars, you’re not going to run properly.

“My family would always tell me to work hard and believe in myself, which has brought me to where I am now. It’s just the beginning. I’ve not achieved anything yet and have got many more things to do in the game.”

Has Amadou Onana been a success so far?

It’s always great to learn about the difficult paths that footballers have taken to eventually reach the Premier League and is very clearly reflected in the commitment and attitude they have on the pitch.

Amadou Onana has been brilliant for Everton at times this season, while he did very well last season considering his age and the role he was forced to play in a relegation battle.

The 22-year-old still has plenty to show and it would be great if he is able to do that at Goodison Park for years to come, though there is no doubt that some of Europe’s giants will come after him if he keeps it up.
