Neal Maupay has been known to ruffle a few feathers during his time as a Premier League footballer.

Brighton, Everton, and Brentford have all had the 27-year-old on their books in recent years, and the Frenchman is never far from the headlines.

It was only this season the striker was caught impersonating James Maddison’s unique celebration after scoring during the Bees’ away loss to Tottenham.

Now Maupay has had his say on the moment a former Everton player copied Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration at Old Trafford.

Maupay not impressed with Andros Townsend Everton celebration

After scoring during the Toffees’ 1-1 draw in 2021, Andros Townsend decided to copy the Real Madrid legend’s ‘suiiiii’ celebration.

“This guy is my idol,” Townsend told TNT Sports.

“I grew up watching Cristiano Ronaldo, spending hours trying to execute his technique. Maybe I should have worked on the celebration because it wasn’t a great execution, but it was a bit of respect for Cristiano.”

However, the Brentford striker has claimed the celebration should have been a “big no”.

“I saw that moment last year when I signed for Everton. People were still talking about it when we played Manchester United,” he told Sport Bible.

“So I went on the internet and I looked for it. For me, that’s a big no. I’m not having it.

“You’re playing against arguably one of the greatest players of all time. He’s scored a thousand goals and you get one goal while he’s on the bench.

“He probably doesn’t even know you. He’s Ronaldo, right? If Ronaldo doesn’t know me, then fair enough.

“To do his celebration? For me, he’s too big for that, so that’s a big no.”

Has Maupay forgotten the Tottenham incident?

Considering he has already copied someone’s celebration this season, aiming criticism towards Townsend seems a bit rich.

Furthermore, Townsend openly admitted in his post-match interview that he was doing it out of respect; Maupay was doing it to wind Maddison and his Tottenham teammates up.

After the result in North London, Maupay’s antics didn’t work.

The Frenchman should focus on his performances, which have been largely disappointing for the last three years.
