Carlo Ancelotti’s prediction about Seamus Coleman still on course to come true at Everton four years later

Everton, through the good and the bad times, have always had Seamus Coleman by their side.

Signed in 2009 for his infamous £60k fee, he remains one of the Premier League‘s best pound-for-pound signings of all time, and a legend on Merseyside.

Having gone on to make 424 appearances for the Toffees, and counting, he has seen changes in ownership and countless alterations in the managerial hot seat.

The greatest to have managed Coleman remains Carlo Ancelotti though, who made a bold prediction four years ago which could still come true.

Carlo Ancelotti’s 2020 comments about Seamus Coleman

Speaking in 2020 about the state of his Everton squad, he, like all others who have overseen Coleman’s time at the club, had nothing but praise for the captain.

However, coming from such a legendary coach, and arguably the greatest manager there has ever been, increases the gravity of his claims exponentially.

He first said of Coleman: ‘It is important for a manager to have in his squad a player who is setting the standards really high.

‘Seamus is an example for the others. In this sense, he is the same as John Terry, Paolo Maldini, Sergio Ramos; all great models for their team-mates.’

Then, following such legendary comparisons, Ancelotti simply stated: ‘We are honoured to have him as a captain in this team. Seamus can play until he’s 40. He’s still young.’

This latter claim is a prediction which still has every chance of coming true.

Fitness update on Everton’s Seamus Coleman

It’s worth noting that, should Coleman’s fitness continue to let him down, this Ancelotti prophecy might not come true.

And, especially in recent years, it has done.

Freak setbacks and random muscular injuries have seen any minor progress made wiped away, and due to his age, it gets harder and harder to return.

However, return he always does, even if it is only for a run of games before the next complication.

It’s actually quite admirable just how much he wants to play for Everton, and is willing to completely ravage his body in the pursuit of progression at Goodison Park.

The latest fitness update on Coleman came earlier this month, with current Everton manager Dyche stating: ‘Coleman is a bit longer as well. Not too much longer, we’re a bit hopeful over this international period he gets closer.’

Whilst Ipswich Town this weekend might be a step too far, perhaps Fulham at home represents a realistic game for him to return in.
