Everton claimed a penalty in the first half of the Merseyside derby.

David Moyes’ side made a really bright start against Liverpool, with Beto missing two decent opportunities.

Everton also felt they could’ve had a penalty, as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall went down under the pressure of Curtis Jones.

That said, former Blackburn Rovers striker and now Sky Sports commentator Chris Sutton gave his verdict on the waved-away appeal.

Chris Sutton agrees with decision not to award Everton a penalty vs Liverpool

Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton reckons the contact wasn’t enough for Dewsbury-Hall to go down, and he feels the Toffees midfielder wasn’t getting to the ball anyway.

“His run is well-timed,” the 53-year-old stated.

“The ball is excellent. Was he getting on the end of that anyway? Too easy, though, to run off the back of Szoboszlai to get in.

“It’s shoulder-to-shoulder with Jones and he’s looking to go down there, Dewsbury-Hall.”

Referee Chris Kavanagh waved play on, and after a short VAR check, the action continued at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

BBC reporter Aadam Patel said the crowd were still enraged that Kavanagh decided not to give the spot kick.

“There’s plenty of sarcastic cheers from the home fans when Chris Kavanagh gives Everton a free-kick just outside the box.

“They’re still furious about the earlier penalty shout.”

Everton supporters were then subjected to more disappointment when Iliman Ndiaye saw his opening goal chalked off.

VAR took the goal away as Jake O’Brien was deemed to be in an offside position in the build-up to Ndiaye’s well-taken strike.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that O’Brien was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed,” the Premier League Match Centre posted on X.
