Everton boss David Moyes has paid tribute to Michael Keane after his performance against Manchester United.

Everton produced a battling display to beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Few could have expected Idrissa Gana Gueye to be handed an early red card for slapping Michael Keane, but that was the situation the Toffees faced.

Everton stepped up and found the only goal of the game when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall beat former Toffees target Senne Lammens from long range.

Everton had to really dig in during the second half, but left United frustrated in a superb away victory.

Dewsbury-Hall’s goal was a beauty, and Everton players deserve enormous praise for a real team effort.

The big talking point is, obviously, the situation surrounding Gueye’s red card.

These incidents have happened in the past, but two teammates clashing in such a physical manner is a fairly rare occurrence.

Gueye and Keane clashed with just 13 minutes on the clock, seemingly arguing after Keane failed to deal with a Gueye pass in the Everton box.

Keane didn’t let that moment unnerve him, though, as he turned in a brilliant performance against his former club.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the final whistle, David Moyes suggested that Keane really stepped up to help Everton secure all three points.

Moyes added that Keane played ‘really well’ and used his experience to preserve Everton’s clean sheet in a fine 1-0 win.

“Michael has stepped up, and we need him,” said Moyes. “He’s experienced and knows how to play. He played really well tonight,” he added.

Idrissa Gana Gueye apologises after his red card vs Man United

“I want to apologise first to my teammate Michael Keane. I take full responsibility for my reaction. I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club.

“What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions can run high but nothing justifies such behaviour. I’ll make sure it never happens again. UTT.”

Michael Keane continues his fantastic season

Keane thought that he would be leaving Everton over the summer as his contract approached its end in June.

Everton struck a deal to keep Keane, and Moyes’ faith in him has been repaid handsomely.

Keane has been outstanding this season, with Monday’s performance just another example of his importance at the back.

Everton fans showed their love for Keane as he left the pitch after a rock-solid display in the heart of defence.

There is an argument to be made that this is Keane’s best run of form since arriving from Burnley way back in 2017.

Keane haunted former club United on Monday night, and his ability to put the Gueye incident behind him speaks to his character and determination to help Everton grab all three points in testing circumstances.
