Everton are hunting for a new striker, and could find one in Rome.
The Friedkin Group – who own both the Toffees and Roma – could help David Moyes land a new frontman as Artem Dovbyk and Evan Ferguson both have uncertain futures in The Eternal City.
Now, Frederic Massara – Director of Football at Roma – has provided an update on the latter as Everton are given a glimmer of hope over signing the Irishman.
Frederic Massara says “we will see” what happens with Evan Ferguson as Everton lurk
It seemed like Roma could terminate their loan agreement with Brighton and send the Republic of Ireland international back to England, as he scored just once in his first 15 appearances this season.
However, Ferguson has given Roma food for thought after netting four goals in his last six games.
After watching this goal from Evan Ferguson, who would be your dream January striker signing? 🤔
He certainly put on a show against Celtic!
Despite that run of form, Massara has still hinted the 21-year-old could go by admitting “we will see” what happens, telling DAZN (via Roma Press) on Saturday: “He’s here and he’s giving us a huge hand.
“He was born in 2004 and is constantly growing. We’re happy with him and to see him on the pitch tonight. What we hope for is to see him here for the entire season. We will see.”
Those final three words are something for Everton fans to cling on to.
Despite his form, Ferguson could yet be replaced in attack by Giacomo Raspadori, who Massara revealed Roma are in advanced talks to sign from Atletico Madrid.
Should that deal materialise as expected, it remains to be seen whether Roma would want to keep paying Ferguson’s wages as opposed to sending him back to Brighton.
Evan Ferguson staying at Roma could still help Everton sign a new striker
If Roma do choose to keep Ferguson – who they have a €40m (£35m) option to buy – Gian Piero Gasperini has to find space to accommodate the Brighton loanee, the incoming Raspadori and Dovbyk.
The Italian only has room to start one of these strikers in his preferred 4-3-3 formation, however.
So, Dovbyk – who Everton are holding talks over – could well be allowed to leave should Roma opt to keep Ferguson and manage to sign Raspadori.
How many goals could Artem Dovbyk score in the Premier League? 💪
He has struggled in the 2025/26 season, though…
After ten days of the winter transfer window, it very much feels as if help from Roma is going to be vital if Everton are to sign a new striker this month.
