Dominic Calvert-Lewin has reiterated his reasons for leaving Everton, explaining how a change was needed for him to get back to his best level.

The striker left last summer when his contract expired.

Wonder how much we’d be able to sell him for…😬

Everton striker Thierno Barry.

That brought to an end a nine-year stay at the club, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin then joining Leeds United, who had just been promoted to the Premier League.

It was always going to be fascinating to see how he’d get on.

Because many felt it was the right call to move on from Calvert-Lewin, after he struggled in recent times due to injuries.

But Calvert-Lewin has insisted his decision to leave has been proven right.

Speaking on ESPN’s ‘The Football Reporters’ podcast, he said: “Yeah, pretty much as simple as that (feeling the need to a fresh start and new challenge).

“And I feel like I get asked that question like it’s not enough. You know, there needs to be more to the story of why I chose to leave.

“But it was something as simple as that. I’d been playing for Everton for nine years and, you know, Everton football club gave me everything that I have today. And I like to think that I was good for the football club and the football club was definitely good to me.

“And I just reached a point where I felt that a new stimulus, a new environment was what was needed to ultimately help me get back to the level I’m at now. And I’ve proven to be right.”

David Moyes has previously suggested that the financials played a part in Calvert-Lewin moving on.

Calvert-Lewin thriving after Everton exit

It’s hard to argue against Calvert-Lewin saying that he has been proven right with his move.

So far this season, he has scored 10 goals in 27 appearances.

He needs six more to equal his best-ever haul of 16 in the Premier League, which he managed for Everton in the 2020/21 season under Carlo Ancelotti.

Calvert-Lewin’s rate of scoring for Leeds has actually slowed down a little lately, which will be a frustration for him.

He’s only been on target twice so far in 2026. But it’s still been a fantastic first season after leaving Everton, and if Leeds stay up then he’ll have certainly played a big part.
