The Premier League and Everton haven’t been on the best terms over the past year.

On Monday, 26 February, the Premier League announced they would be handing back four points after the Toffees’ appeal was successful.

The verdict ends a period of uncertainty at Goodison Park, which left Sean Dyche’s side perilously close to the relegation zone.

Everton’s situation has seen plenty of criticism aimed in the Premier League’s direction.

Talking on the Stick to Football Podcast, Ian Wright has brandished the situation as “embarrassing”.

Ian Wright makes ’embarrassing’ Premier League claim

The former Arsenal striker highlighted how the Premier League made two mistakes when initially charging Everton.

“Remember, they’ve made a mistake on two of them; they got them wrong,” he said.

“They’ve got people with nine charges, and they get them wrong to the point where they’ve got to give points back.

“What will Manchester City’s lawyers do to people like this? They’re going to have them dancing.

“What they should have done is fine Everton, then the appeal goes in, and the judgment occurs afterwards. How are you going to do it before? It’s an embarrassing situation.”

Second Premier League charge looms

Attention now turns to the second charge. Everton and Nottingham Forest are believed to have breached PSR during last season’s assessment period.

The Premier League is set to announce their punishment in the middle of April. The timing could lead to the season being finalised after the last ball has been kicked.

Talking on the same podcast, Jamie Carragher believes Everton will be docked one or two points.

“The problem with Everton is that this new sanction includes two from the previous two years,” he said.

“So they’ll be saying, ‘we can’t get six points after we’ve already been punished. I think Everton will get one or two points, and Forest will probably get six.”

For Everton’s sake, one or two points would be an excellent outcome. A more significant amount could see the Toffees’ league position under threat after the Premier League season has come to a close.
