James Garner has revealed a key instruction that Sean Dyche gave his Everton team ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bournemouth.
Everton finally managed a Premier League win at Goodison Park with a 3-0 triumph over Bournemouth on Saturday. James Garner, Jack Harrison, and Abdoulaye Doucoure provided the goals.
Whilst Bournemouth were extremely poor, Sean Dyche deserves credit for engineering this victory. The manager got his tactics just right, as the Toffees produced an attacking display, creating plenty of chances, whilst remaining defensively solid.
The result marked the Merseyside club’s third win from the last four matches, across all competitions. This decent run of recent form has now given Everton a platform to build on, following their dismal start to the campaign.
Garner has been a key contributor to the recent upturn in Everton’s fortunes. As well as scoring against the Cherries, he bagged a goal in the EFL Cup win over Aston Villa, and he has generally been very impressive.

Garner a good fit for Dyche tactics
The 22-year-old midfielder brings extra energy and creativity to the middle of the park for Everton, and is willing to chip in defensively. The £15 million former Manchester United man works hard to close down and press opponents when they are on the ball.
Garner has now said that the manner in which Everton press is something that Dyche is very specific about, and was part of the game plan for taking on Bournemouth. Speaking to the club’s official website, he said, “the manager wants us to press at all times. He wanted us to press up high today and that’s how the first goal came about. We had a few chances in the second half where it was the exact same scenario.”
Everton now need to replicate the energy and dynamism they played this game with. Whilst they won’t necessarily get the exact same result against tougher opponents, Dyche should see this performance as the model for how his team ought to play.
Garner has the capacity to be at the heart of this adventurous, progressive Everton team. He has certainly gone a long way towards making himself an indispensable feature of the starting XI in recent weeks.
