Heading into Deadline Day, it’s clear that, for Everton, there are still a few huge vacancies which will need to be filled.

However, identifying those gaps and actually filling them are two completely different things.

The Toffees need another midfielder, a winger and, ideally, a right-back.

Yet as we near the conclusion of the summer transfer window, it has looked increasingly likely that the latter was to be omitted once again.

That was, until this latest piece of information emerged, offering hope to fans once again.

Everton in talks to sign Lorenz Assignon before summer deadline

Despite being just two games into the Premier League season, already Sean Dyche‘s squad is threadbare.

They are slowly getting those injured stars back, but it’s damning that a 19-year-old Roman Dixon was forced to make his senior debut away to Tottenham Hotspur due to the sheer lack of options left at right-back.

Seamus Coleman is always injured, as is Nathan Patterson, and Ashley Young can no longer be trusted in the long term.

So, a solution is required.

Fortunately, journalist Fabrice Hawkins has brought one to the table, detailing Everton’s interest in signing Lorenz Assignon from Rennes.

He wrote on X: ‘OM and Everton are still interested in Lorenz Assignon. Negotiations in progress between the club and Stade Rennais regarding a loan with option to buy,’

The French full-back spent the second-half of last season on loan at Burnley during their relegation from the Premier League, and was linked with an £8.5m move to Aston Villa earlier in the summer.

How good is Everton target Lorenz Assignon?

Although it was only a short 15-game stint in the Premier League, Assignon boasts that much-needed experience in the division that proves enough to receive Dyche’s seal of approval.

The 53-year-old has developed a peculiar obsession with wanting players who have already played at this level, and even his new signings are not yet deemed ready despite having invested heavily to sign them all.

However, Assignon would surely hit the ground running, fresh from that six-month spell in Lancashire.

His integration would also be eased by the acquisition of another Ligue 1 star, with Orel Mangala having completed his Everton medical now too.

Although he could not stop the Clarets’ relegation, he still performed admirably, scoring once, assisting twice and maintaining 4.3 ball recoveries and 0.9 key passes per game, via Sofascore.

A creative threat but also a solid defender, Assignon could be the answer to all Evertonians’ prayers.
