Everton looked to be falling behind a Premier League rival in the race to land a target.

The Toffees want a new right-back, with Ed Aarons revealing that Everton are keen to sign Zakaria El Ouahdi from Genk this month.

However, there was a problem, as the Guardian journalist added that Crystal Palace were advancing in talks.

The Evening Standard then poured salt on the wound for David Moyes by adding that El Ouahdi is keen to join Crystal Palace.

However, a story from Africa Foot now gives Everton hope of beating the south Londoners to the Morocco international.

Everton now advancing in talks to sign Zakaria El Ouahdi and could win personal terms battle

The African news outlet now state that Everton are also in advanced talks with Genk over a deal for the Moroccan right-back along with Crystal Palace.

Everton want to sign Zakaria El Ouahdi… he looks like an upgrade on Jake O’Brien 🤩

Interestingly – contrary to what the Evening Standard reported – Africa Foot simply say El Ouahdi is keen on a move to the Premier League, not only Crystal Palace, and that he wants to play for a side capable of qualifying for European football.

While Crystal Palace are currently in the UEFA Conference League, they are one point behind Everton in the Premier League, and the Toffees are only three points off sixth place.

Africa Foot add that the Genk No.77 is “prioritising a stable and ambitious sporting project” – which Everton can certainly offer after the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Furthermore, while the aforementioned Aarons mentioned a £12m price tag, Africa Foot claim Genk want €12m (£10m) – so this deal could actually be cheaper for Everton than initially expected.

Jose Mourinho poses a threat to Everton as well

While El Ouahdi – who thrives when attacking – is eager to experience English football, there is a chance of Jose Mourinho taking the Morocco international out of reach for both Everton and Crystal Palace.

Africa Foot add that the managerial legend is hoping to bring the Genk defender to Benfica, after the Portuguese giants tried and failed to sign him during the summer transfer window.

Benfica are, of course, regulars in European football, and can offer El Ouahdi the chance to play UEFA Champions League football this season, so they are a threat Everton cannot dismiss.
