Everton are lacking a dynamic duo like fans have seen in years gone by.
The partnership of Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman was arguably the best full-back pairing in the entire Premier League for a few years, while more recently, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku caused havoc together in attack.
Everton actually want Lukaku back – according to Il Matino in Italy.
Sabah in Turkey have another interesting story as they claimed Everton are trying to sign N’Golo Kante – a deal which would presumably excite Idrissa Gueye considering what he told Sky Sports back in April 2017.
N’Golo Kante to Everton, YES or NO? 😮
Idrissa Gueye has already shared his N’Golo Kante verdict as Everton hold talks
When asked to name the best midfielder in history, the Everton No.27 referenced Claude Makelele initially, but later settled on Kante – who he could soon play alongside at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Gueye said: “For me, it is Claude Makelele. He’s a very good defensive midfielder. He was clever and (won) a lot of ball but now we have N’Golo Kante who does very well on the pitch for Chelsea. He did very well for Leicester last season and this season he’s doing very good.
“Yes, I think he’s the best because last season he won the league with Leicester. He did very well and then this season maybe he will win the league with Chelsea. For me, he is the best midfielder in the world.”
Back in 2016, both Kante and Gueye were considered to be among the finest ball-winners in the entire Premier League, if not the whole of European football.
Of course, they may now be 34 and 36 years of age respectively, but David Moyes could still enjoy at least two productive seasons with the duo if an agreement can be found with Al-Ittihad this month.
Successful N’Golo Kante talks could represent a blow for Merlin Rohl
Merlin Rohl shone in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa last time out, playing alongside James Garner in defensive midfield.
The German finally looks to be finding his feet at Everton following a move from Freiburg in September, and represents the future for the Toffees at the age of just 23.
Was that Merlin Rohl’s best game in an Everton shirt? 💪
However, signing an established, elite midfielder in Kante would surely see Rohl return to the bench, potentially hindering his development just as he starts to make some progress under Moyes.
Having said that, it is a difficult situation for The Friedkin Group, as a player like Kante cannot be ignored if they actually are an option for Everton this winter.
