Everton edging closer to unexpected financial boost thanks to £15m striker they sold

Everton could be in line for an unexpected cash boost this summer, thanks to one of their loanees finding form.

Everton signed Neal Maupay for £15m from Brighton in August 2022, but despite high hopes, he’d never quite shown why he deserved to have cost that much.

With Sean Dyche clearly not a fan, he was shipped back to his former club, Brentford for the season on loan much to the delight of Thomas Frank.

Upon his announcement, Frank admitted he had “no doubt that Neal will come back to us and thrive”, something Everton will now be enviously watching.

The French forward has found a rich vein of form for the Bees, with five goals in his last five games across all competitions. This brings his season tally to seven goals and three assists in just 19 games.

While this will be annoying to watch for the Toffees, it brings with it some positive news…

Neal Maupay’s form could reward Everton

After Maupay’s latest goal on Monday against City, Evertonians began to wonder if Brentford would be looking to sign him permanently.

Now, Liverpool ECHO‘s Joe Thomas has explained that his form makes this likely to happen.

The goals also make it more likely that the forward will trigger his appearance clause which the Echo believe is in his contract.

So while it was hoped he’d be a success at Goodison Park, the fact he’s thriving at Brentford coupled with the potential windfall makes a permanent exit the best for all parties.

Maupay’s Everton career is vastly different to elsewhere

The fact that Maupay has been so prolific at Brentford raises the question of what went wrong for him at Everton, other than the fans he blamed.

In 32 appearances for the Toffees last season he scored just once and assisted two which is an appalling return. He cost the club £15m per goal, plus his wages.

Even with assists taken into account £5m per goal contribution is a ridiculous amount and showcases the need for due diligence before making a signing in the future.

The replacement to Maupay that was signed in Beto has also struggled however and for £25.75m he has one Premier League goal in 18 games with a further two goals in the Carabao Cup. Lesson not learned…
