The 2014 World Cup Golden Boot winner memorably made the surprise move to Merseyside back in September 2022 for a rumoured sum of £22m – swapping Real Madrid for Goodison Park as he reunited with Carlo Ancelotti.

The Colombia international went on to score six goals and provide nine assists in 26 appearances for Everton before leaving to join Al-Rayyan in September 2021.

It has since been a turbulent time for James Rodriguez – who has played for four other clubs in Olympiacos, Sao Paulo, Rayo Vallecano and Leon since leaving Qatar – but he is now set for a “shocking move” to Minnesota United after becoming a free agent in December.

James Rodriguez set for Major League Soccer switch

The Athletic now state that the South American is holding talks with Minnesota United – as he aims to find a new club and build up his match fitness ahead of the World Cup this summer.

It is described as a potentially “shocking move” by Tom Bogert, with it said that Rodriguez would “easily become the biggest global star” in the American side’s history.

The 34-year-old can boast 122 caps for Colombia, two UEFA Champions League titles, a FIFA Puskas Award and many, many other pieces of silverware, so it would certainly be a special move for Minnesota United.

Minnesota United move hopefully means Everton fans will see the best of James Rodriguez at the World Cup

Some Everton fans on social media have even said they would love to see Rodriguez back on Merseyside playing at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but that is clearly not an option for The Friedkin Group – who have had since December to offer the Colombian a contract.

Nevertheless, the majority of Everton supporters will surely just be glad to hear that a fan favourite is close to finding a new home, ahead of what is surely going to be his last taste of the World Cup this summer.

Deadline day is now done… what’s your thoughts, Toffees? 😬

A fit and firing Rodriguez – who Dimitar Berbatov adores – is a sight to behold for any football fan, so hopefully, his move to Minnesota can go through without any hitches.
