Rafa Benitez was the Everton boss from July 2021 to January 2022, and some fans still haven’t forgiven him for one particular decision he made.

It’s safe to say that Rafa Benitez‘s time at Everton was rather disastrous, as he managed just 1.14 points on average per game.

Benitez told Jamie Carragher the reason he wanted to manage Everton was because his family were in Liverpool, so it made sense for him.

And if you’re looking for reasoning on the appointment from those high up at Everton, apparently, Farhad Moshiri believed that Benitez was the best option available at the time.

Regardless, it didn’t end well and there is one particular decision that has left a sour taste in the mouths of Everton fans as they’re still not happy to this day.

Everton fans furious that Rafa Benitez sold Lucas Digne after what he did for France this week

Lucas Digne joined Everton from Barcelona back in 2018 and was a brilliant servant.

He appeared 127 times for Everton, scoring six goals and providing 20 assists.

A day after Lucas Digne left Everton, Rafa Benitez was sacked.

This led to suggestions that the sale was unnecessary, and if Benitez had gone first, Digne might have stayed. But it’s been made apparent that the Toffees weren’t in the best of financial situations.

The fact that the pair had a rift no doubt played a big part in the departure of Digne and his personal want for an exit, so you can understand why some fans may be aggrieved.

It was his free-kick he scored recently against Italy that really set them off.

These Everton fans, when speaking on X, all haven’t forgiven Rafa Benitez.

“I’ll never forgive Benitez.”, @curvycarlyefc said.

@LeePazzini wasn’t happy: “Unforgivable! Arguably the best LB in the league right now! Convinced he just wanted a pay day! Sold James and brought in Rondon too.”

@naven_gary stated: “Rafa. And that’s no 1 in the worst things Everton have done.”

@MarkMcD20131944 mentioned: “Yes shocking move.”

“Benitez sabotage job.”, @BenWill1973 made a bold claim.

@bobstev53681908 commented: “”Trust the manager: Rafa,” many of our fans said. Called us a ‘small club’ and come to us, on his doorstep. Low block manager and Liverpool’s legend who won the Champions League. He got rid of Rodriguez and Digne. He give us Patterson and Gray. Another like called Dyche came in.”
