Everton were probably the better team in the Merseyside derby.
Jake O’Brien said Everton deserved more against Liverpool, but ultimately let themselves down with poor defending in key moments.
Vitalii Mykolenko had a really poor game as he gave the ball away a staggering 18 times, and Thierno Barry was ineffective when he came on, too.
What went wrong there for Everton? 😫
Heartbreak for the Blues in the derby
With that said, Everton supporters have a message for David Moyes as they felt he could’ve made better decisions to avoid the late defeat.
Everton fans slam David Moyes’ substitutions vs Liverpool
Replying to the TalkingPoint below, Everton fans were very critical of Moyes’ substitutions in the Merseyside derby.
What could Moyes have done differently to avoid that late goal? 🫣
Many felt the Scotsman should’ve been more proactive when Giorgi Mamardashvili was forced off, with Freddie Woodman coming on.
- “Think it would have been good to see Moyes be a bit bolder and chuck someone like Dibling on – Liverpool were vulnerable when Woodman had to come on and we did nothing to put pressure on him.”
- “Just leave Beto on, he was giving VVD and Konate something to think about.”
- “We lost the game as soon as Moyes brought on Barry and Beto went off. We’ve lost our chances of Europe now. Why bring on Barry? He should have bought George on.”
- “I would much rather play Keane to replace Barry. Barry is not cut out for the Premier League. He makes Dennis Straq look like Pele.”
- “He could have played to win. To lose in that fashion at that moment on this day in this game is unforgivable. From Kinnear down to the subs today, the club needs a clear-out. The culture is rotten, survival, not success, is all they are interested in.”
- “Send Barry out on loan to a championship club to toughen him up. He’s young and just not good enough at the moment.”
- “Why not bring Patterson on when Branthwaite went off and push O’Brien to centre back? Moyes is experienced enough to know when to bring fresh legs on, but he is a dinosaur. Totally had enough of him and his tactics, I wouldn’t want to be a young player waiting to play for Everton while he is the manager.”
Evidently, the consensus is that Barry simply isn’t good enough, so Moyes and his Toffees chiefs should be looking to move him on in the summer.
Everton will make a loss on the £30m they paid for the Frenchman, but it’s better to sell early than let his stock drop even further.
In hindsight, perhaps George should’ve been given a go up front instead of Barry, and then Tyler Dibling could’ve been given a chance when Dwight McNeil came off.
Moyes certainly has a lot to consider ahead of his return to West Ham United next weekend.
