Everton made the long journey back from the South Coast empty-handed on Saturday after their 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Southampton.
Sean Dyche’s side had just 35 per cent possession against The Saints and he worryingly tried to justify that in his post-match press conference.
It just further amplifies exactly why he isn’t the man long-term for Everton, so the Friedkin Group should already be identifying his successor.
Gareth Southgate had been linked to Goodison Park but those rumours have since gone quiet after he revealed he’ll be taking a break from football.
Whilst Dyche is certainly underperforming, it isn’t totally all down to him and fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to voice their frustration at Dominic Calvert-Lewin in particular after the Southampton defeat.

Everton fans want Dominic Calvert-Lewin dropped for Beto
Most Everton fans were in agreeance about Dominic Calvert-Lewin yesterday as they posted their frustration on X.
@ianfarrant01 said: “Let’s forget the overall better player. RIGHT NOW Beto is looking the most likely to get us the goals. So he should 100% be starting over Calvert-Lewin.”
“Beto has earned a run of games in my eyes now. I’d honestly give him a run in the team. Calvert-Lewin has been nowhere near it for weeks. I’d argue Beto has done more in the 30 mins of footy he’s had. No doubt he will frustrate, but he’s got heart and always looks a threat,” @TheGoodisonMole posted.
@EvertonViews added: “I’ve been saying Calvert-Lewin should be starting over Beto, I think it’s time that changes.”
“Once again Calvert Lewin looked disinterested, as average as Beto is he deserves a run now and who knows he could improve,” @AlanMer70806285 vented.
@AlexThompson_78 wrote: “Don’t want to see any slight in Beto today, him and Harrison changed that game. Has to start against Wolves, Calvert Lewin offers nothing.”
@ahughes97 shared: “How can we still have Dyche at this club. we don’t play football. it’s terrible to watch, got beat by an awful Southampton side, you just knew it’d be us. For me Beto has to start calvert lewin none existent again and Beto nearly scores twice in 20 mins.”
Beto stats compared to Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Beto’s underlying data amplifies just why he should be starting ahead of Calvert-Lewin, who looks completely bereft of confidence.
| Stats per 90 | Beto | Dominic Calvert-Lewin |
| Non-penalty goals | 0.50 | 0.14 |
| Non-penalty xG | 0.61 | 0.43 |
| Aerials won | 4.36 | 5.35 |
| Succesful take-ons | 0.75 | 0.50 |
Evidently, Beto’s underlying data is far superior and ultimately, his goal threat is a lot greater, so he should start against West Ham United this weekend.
He’s also showing more passion and fight in the Everton shirt, which was evident with the emotion he let out after the draw against Fulham and the loss to Southampton.
