Everton have an opportunity to sign Riyad Mahrez on a free transfer.
It emerged on Saturday evening that Riyad Mahrez will be leaving Al-Ahli after three seasons at the Saudi Pro League side.
Mahrez, who celebrated his 35th birthday in February, is believed to favour a move back to England to be closer to his family, per Dean Ammi.
So, The Friedkin Group may explore the potential deal as David Moyes still needs another wide player with Jack Grealish returning to Manchester City.
We asked our TalkingPoints users whether the club should sign Mahrez, and it’s fair to say the opinions are completely split.
Mahrez has just left Al-Ahli… should Everton sign him on a free? 👀
Everton fans totally split on whether the club should sign Riyad Mahrez
We asked Everton fans whether they’d take Mahrez on a free transfer, and some were well up for the potential signing.
Others feel he’s past his best.
- “No brainer on a free.”
- “Free? If so then obviously. Sell Ndiaye.”
- “Absolutely yes, far better than anyone at Everton.”
- “Too old for me. We’ve had enough journeymen down the years. Have to be focusing on youth now. Hackney and George are a good start but let’s get some more young blood in.”
- “It would have a bit of James Rodriguez about it. The wages would probs be crazy but…”
- “I would say no. The Mahrez of now needs to save energy and let the team do 80% of the work before you hear from him. That simply isn’t going to work in a Moyes system, especially on the road where Everton are so strong.”
- “He’s 35 now, no thanks.”
- “For a season, yeah.”
- “We gotta stop signing players on their past reputations and buy young and hungry (which we seem to be doing this year).”
- “We don’t need more wingers, we need full backs and strikers.”
Indeed, a right-back and a striker are more of a priority position for Everton at this stage, especially with Tyrique George filling a void on the wing.
But there’s no doubt it’s a unique market opportunity for the Toffees to sign a truly top-class player who is still operating at a high level.
The former Manchester City playmaker registered three goal involvements in four appearances at the World Cup with Algeria.
Mahrez would be a superb role model for the young attackers at the club, as they’d learn the art of dribbling and creating space to get a shot off.
Tyler Dibling, who is also a left-footed wide player, would especially benefit from the potential addition.
