Everton have achieved something defensively this season which no other Premier League side has

Everton have not really been the best at anything for a very long time.

Years of quiet mediocrity under David Moyes’ cash-strapped era was largely accepted, but when Farhad Moshiri made his investment known, an air of expectation emerged.

His seemingly endless pit of money promised a brighter future, and yet since blowing it, they have ironically regressed.

Now, they have become the first club to be properly stung by PSR regulations, staring down the barrel of a third straight relegation battle.

And yet, they remain a leader in the Premier League for one key statistic, which is indicative of what makes them a true Sean Dyche unit capable of escaping the drop again.

What are Everton the best in the Premier League at?

Although it may be quite a niche statistic, it is still one which they lead the division for, which is admirable.

After all, it perfectly exemplifies what a Dyche team is all about, forged on solidity and starring qualities in key areas of the pitch.

Naturally, his centre-back pairing is of the utmost importance, and he was lucky enough to inherit the talents of James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, which he has fused together this campaign.

A couple of towering titans who are unmovable in the air, this statistic is easily explained by their continued presence.

It is noted by OptaJoe, who claims: ‘Everton are the only team in the Premier League yet to concede a headed goal this season. Focus.’

The improvement at Everton is remarkable

Whilst many might rush to laud Dyche for adding some creative quality to his side, the lack of proficiency at the end of their attacking moves somewhat dampens their effectiveness and in turn the adulation.

But, at the back, the marked improvement is clearly visible both through statistics and merely by watching the matches.

As such, it has rightly been the object of huge praise.

Branthwaite in particular has stolen the plaudits, with many clubs reportedly now scrambling to secure his signature.

But, at just 21 years old and with a new long-term contract penned back in October, the hope is that he can stick around for a little while longer to truly fulfil his potential on Merseyside.

Given this is his first full Premier League term, to have had such a huge hand in reducing their goals conceded per game from 1.5 last season to 1.33 this campaign is huge.

Not only that, but their exploits have allowed Jordan Pickford to stand alone at the top of the clean sheet charts too.

The improvement is remarkable and there for all to see. If they could only start finding the net with the chances they forge, and they could be an unstoppable unit certain to avoid the drop with ease.
