Everton have tied the bulk of their summer business up quite early, but any made now will have to be a last-gasp decision given how close we are to the conclusion of the window.
Naturally, Kevin Thelwell will have had all of his targets planned well in advance ahead of this transfer period, but there are always obstacles that emerge which halt the progression of potential deals.
So, with the director of football now seemingly still after a midfielder, a winger and potentially even a striker should Dominic Calvert-Lewin leave Everton, people must not mistake any last-minute business for a panic-buy.
Instead, it could and should be viewed as a tactical ploy to prey on any specific alterations that have occurred over a busy summer.
This particular report exhibits just that.
Everton ask for information on Jens Cajuste
After all, Jens Cajuste was surely a long-term target of Everton’s, but they were likely resigned to the fact that Brentford would get their top target.
They had agreed a £10m deal with Napoli, and were seemingly cruising towards a straightforward deal.

That was, until everything inexplicably collapsed, leaving the door wide open for a club like the Toffees to swoop in.
Everton’s interest in Jens Cajuste has already been outlined, but now Sky Sports journalist Gianluca di Marzio has sought to affirm this notion by confirming that Thelwell has in fact ‘asked for information’ about the player, a late enquiry to understand the terms of the deal.
Rumours were tentative at first, but with this well-respected reporter now wading into the situation, Evertonians can begin dreaming of another late deal which finally fills their midfield vacancy.
How good is Everton target Jens Cajuste?
Ever since Amadou Onana left for Aston Villa, there have been questions over who would replace him for Sean Dyche.
However, it’s worth noting that, at the back end of the campaign, he lost his place in the starting side, which coincided with Everton’s best run of form.
A direct replacement is not really needed, more so just more quality and depth in the engine room.
And Cajuste would certainly provide that, standing at 6 foot 2 but boasting the tactical and technical intelligence to both defend and progress the play.
Last season, starring for an out-of-sorts Napoli side, the 25-year-old ranked in the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90 as well as the top 5% for tackles per 90 when compared to the midfielders across Europe, via FBref.

Able to break up the play and then stride forward, using his huge frame to shrug off challenges, Cajuste could be the perfect final piece of Dyche’s puzzle to lead them into a brighter Premier League campaign.
