Everton are still in talks with Leeds United over a move for Wilfried Gnonto.
Having enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in which he bagged two goals and four assists in the Premier League, Wilfried Gnonto was quickly heavily linked with a move to Everton.
In what seemed like the most frustrating transfer saga ever, The Toffees spent months trying to bring the forward to Goodison Park and saw a number of bids rejected.
Reports claimed that Gnonto had handed in a written transfer request and was refusing to train with Leeds, before making a U-turn and eventually remaining at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer deadline.
While there was talk of Gnonto actually signing a new deal with the Whites and increasing his £20k-per-week salary, his first season in the Championship actually hasn’t gone quite as well as hoped and he could now be on his way out.
After spending months resisting Everton’s interest, Gnonto has now only scored one goal in the second tier – which came way back in August against Ipswich Town.
The ‘special‘ 20-year-old has made any seven starts and has found himself down the pecking order behind the likes of Dan James and Crysencio Summerville, who have 20 league goals between them.
With Gnonto’s future at Leeds looking bleak, journalist Rudy Galetti has now reported that Everton are ‘still working’ to bring the Italian to Merseyside and consider him a ‘main target’.
The news comes after recent reports claimed that Arnaut Danjuma’s loan deal could be cut short after struggling to make an impact, while Dwight McNeil was stretchered off last night, leaving Sean Dyche light on options out wide.
Should Everton pursue Wilfried Gnonto once again?
With three-and-half years still left on his contract with Leeds United, Everton are surely going to have still cough up plenty of cash to snap Wilfried Gnonto up this month.
While the young forward hasn’t been as impressive as expected this term, it is obvious that he still has plenty of potential and has already proven himself in the Premier League.
The Whites may well want to keep him for if they win promotion back to the top flight too, though it is unclear whether Gnonto actually wants to stay there at this point.

As has been said for almost a year now, Gnonto would be an excellent signing for The Toffees. But there recent spending pattern makes splashing out on the Italy international seem rather far-fetched, while his attitude displayed in the summer is surely a concern.
If Everton were to be relegated, would he just demand a move away in six months time?
