Everton hero Wayne Rooney is currently managing MLS side D.C. United, but his time in Washington could be set to come to an end.
The former striker has been managing D.C. United since 2022, having ended his playing career at the club, and is in the final few months of his contract.
Everton manager Sean Dyche may now find himself under increasing pressure, particularly if his side lose at home to Bournemouth today, and if Rooney suddenly becomes available, he could be an option to replace him.
Rooney on verge of MLS exit?
The Washington Post have now reported that Rooney has had a disagreement with the hierarchy at the club amidst his uncertain future in the Capital, and even missed training yesterday ahead of his side’s final league game of the season.
He is expected to be on the touchline against New York City FC, but his future remains doubtful beyond that.
It has been claimed that he had a “last-minute conflict” which stopped him from attending training, and it seems likely that he will depart the club soon.
He was touted as a replacement for Sean Dyche should the Everton manager lose his job, with Rooney playing for the club over two spells after coming through the academy.
Could Rooney return to Everton?

The 37-year-old has already had two managerial spells, at Derby County and D.C. United, and his time at Derby saw him exceed expectations with a side in chaos.
D.C. United are set to finish just below the MLS playoff places, and have won just once in their last 11 league matches.
Although Rooney is a popular figure at Everton, it is just too big a risk to hire him now when the threat of relegation is so high.
Dyche was meant to be an experienced head to help Everton avoid relegation, which he managed last season, and replacing him with Rooney may not be beneficial in the short term.
