Everton have been on a really rocky run of form over the last few weeks.

David Moyes’ side are still searching for the first win of 2026 and have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions.

Everton are currently languishing in the bottom half of the table ahead of their trip to Aston Villa this afternoon.

As such, Moyes has come under some scrutiny among supporters, who believe the Toffees should be in and around the European spots after shelling out over £100m in the summer transfer window.

With that said, an Everton icon has just put himself in the frame to take the job if Moyes is sacked by the Friedkin Group.

Wayne Rooney says he’d take the Everton job if David Moyes left

Speaking on the BBC’s Football Focus programme, Wayne Rooney discussed the recent events at Manchester United and put his name in the hat for a position at the club amid Michael Carrick’s appointment.

Rooney also said that he would snap up a job at Everton if the call ever came.

“I said last week, if Manchester United called me and asked me to go in in any capacity, then I’d gladly do that,” the 40-year-old explained.

“It’s a club which for myself I love the football club and I was there for 13 years.

“It’s probably one of the only two clubs I would go back into coaching for, in Manchester United and Everton.”

Moyes is unlikely to be dismissed any time soon, although he only has 18 months left on his contract and has a lot left to prove in order to get a renewal.

Who did Wayne Rooney last manage?

Well, Rooney’s last job was in the Championship with Plymouth Argyle, but he really struggled on the south coast.

Rooney was sacked by Plymouth at the end of 2024, leaving the club at the foot of the second tier. That followed a dire spell at Birmingham City.

Since then, Rooney has been linked with a boxing fight on MisFits, but those rumours have gone quiet recently.

The former England international star has been doing punditry and seems keen to get back into football with either Man United or Everton.
