Everton may ‘now’ have to sell one player after PSR breach, it’s not Amadou Onana

Everton may be set to repeat old frustrations, with reports emerging suggesting their star assets may be forced out of the door.

It is fair to say that in recent years the Toffees have lacked the necessary ambition to match some of the superstars had at their disposal.

John Stones, Romelu Lukaku and Richarlison all left in search of something more, and whilst the club were sufficiently renumerated, they are now left financially hamstrung and without those talismanic figures.

However, new stars have naturally emerged, yet the club remain stuck in their vicious cycle.

So, who are these assets who could tread that same path out of Goodison Park? And will they be sold anytime soon? We take a closer look…

What players might Everton have to sell after latest PSR breach?

Naturally, the most revered Everton stars are the younger ones, who have weathered the many storms faced on Merseyside whilst boasting their entire careers ahead of them.

That unsurprisingly sees both Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite stand out, given their unrelenting presence in integral areas of the pitch and consistent hunger to achieve excellence.

This duo make up the spine of Sean Dyche’s revitalised side, with the defender thwarting everything that comes his way, and the midfielder dictating things in the engine room.

And whilst it is the latter reportedly most likely to leave, talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has suggested otherwise.

Speaking live on TalkSPORT (16/1 12:36 pm), he would note: ‘Well, Jarrad Branthwaite as you mentioned is just about Everton’s most sellable asset at this moment in time.

‘Obviously, we’ve been speaking a lot about Everton’s financial issues in the last 24 hours, yet more alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules.

‘If they are to sell in the summer, and I’m told that there’s every chance they might now have to cash in on Branthwaite, he is the most sellable asset because he counts as a home-grown player and we know that gives you maximum profit on the balance sheet.“And there’s a lot of interest in Branthwaite, I know I’ve mentioned Manchester United in my transfer notebook previously.

‘I think the Real Madrid rumours have got some substance because of course, Branthwaite played under Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park. Ancelotti has continued to monitor his progress, Arsenal are tracking the situation, Newcastle as well.’

How important is Jarrad Branthwaite for Everton?

To lose Onana would be a crushing blow, but as far as positions go, central midfield is arguably one of Everton’s strongest areas.

At centre-back however, there is nobody who even comes close to the output Branthwaite is enjoying this term.

His maturity belies his youth, with the 21-year-old boasting the perfect blend of solidity and comfort in possession that sets him way apart from the likes of Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey.

No matter the fee recouped, they would struggle to find someone as well-rounded as the Englishman, who this term is averaging 2.1 tackles, 4.7 clearances and 6.4 ball recoveries per game in the Premier League, via Sofascore.
