When Farhad Moshiri was Everton’s owner, the club had a very scattergun approach to transfers, and it caused a lot of financial issues.
Everton’s recruitment was largely poor as well, and it never felt like they had a proper structured plan in place.

When Romelu Lukaku left for Manchester United in 2017, the Toffees were frantically trying to find an adequate replacement right up until the deadline.
With that said, they actually made a club-record bid to sign a Chelsea striker.
Deadline day is now done… what’s your thoughts, Toffees? 😬
What more could have been done? 🫣
Everton once submitted £66m bid for Diego Costa
According to a report from Spanish outlet Marca back in 2017, Everton submitted a club-record £66m bid to sign Chelsea striker Diego Costa in the final stages of the summer transfer window.
The Toffees had a sizable budget after selling Lukaku for £75m, and then manager Ronald Koeman was keen to recruit Costa.
The Spaniard had just come off the back of a 22-goal season, helping Chelsea to win the Premier League under Antonio Conte.
Unfortunately for the Toffees, they were quickly notified that Costa only had eyes for Atletico Madrid, whom he joined a few months later in the January window.
It probably worked out for the best anyway, as he never really got going back in La Liga, showing signs of a decline.
Let us know what your advice to Tyrique George would be after signing for Everton… 🤔
What are you wanting to see from the youngster 💥
Who did Everton sign instead of Diego Costa?
Everton tried to replace Lukaku with two different profiles of strikers.
Koeman ended up signing back Wayne Rooney from Manchester United, and highly-rated Sandro Ramirez also joined.
Could we see George as a number nine? 😮
The latter didn’t work out at all, but Rooney did manage to notch a commendable 10 league goals that term.
Turkish frontman Cenk Tosun was also recruited for big money in the winter, and that was another disastrous transfer.
