Everton have recorded some memorable results against Manchester City over the years.
The best of the bunch was arguably that 4-0 win over Pep Guardiola at Goodison Park in January 2017, as goals from Romelu Lukaku, Kevin Mirallas, Tom Davies and Ademola Lookman sealed a historic result for Everton under Ronald Koeman.
It was Guardiola’s heaviest league defeat of his managerial career at the time, a record Tottenham have since matched having beaten the Spaniard by the same scoreline in November 2024.
When reminiscing over that victory ahead of Manchester City coming to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday, Everton chose to post footage of Lookman’s goal – which is an unwise move considering how poorly the Toffees handled the Nigeria international while he was on Merseyside.
How much confidence have you got in Moyes to get three points against City? 🫣
Not the most encouraging of comments ahead of the game… 😭
Everton are only reminding fans about what could have been by uploading Ademola Lookman goal
The Londoner was just 19 when he scored that goal against Manchester City, on his Premier League debut no less following an £11m move from Charlton in that January transfer window of 2017.
It looked as if Lookman, who Dominic Calvert-Lewin admired, was set for a bright future with Everton, but his treatment after that strike against the Citizens was downright bizarre.
The man from Wandsworth was hardly given any further opportunities by Koeman – who was sacked in October 2017 – and Everton eventually loaned him to RB Leipzig in 2018 with Sam Allardyce at the helm.
The Bundesliga side paid £22.5m to take Lookman on a permanent basis in July 2019, after Everton handed the winger just seven Premier League starts in total throughout his time at Goodison Park.
Now, the 28-year-old is a superstar.
Lookman is currently a regular for Atletico Madrid following a £30.3m move from Atalanta in January, having scored 55 goals in 137 games for the Italian side. Three of those came in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, as his hat-trick sealed a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
In the meantime, Everton fans have to watch Dwight McNeil start on the wing on a weekly basis.
How would you have the side lined up if you were David Moyes? 🤩
Let's hope Beto is ready to go on Monday! 🤕
The Toffees meant no harm in posting Lookman’s goal, but it only serves as a painful reminder about how a precocious talent slipped away from Everton needlessly.
