Everton remain interested in Wilfried Gnonto as January transfer chances now rated

Despite Kevin Thelwell’s open admittance that Everton would likely endure a quiet January window, the rumour mill has still kicked into gear.

As often an easy target for ludicrous links, given their willingness to spend big on seemingly anyone and everyone, their recent financial frustrations have somewhat marred that easy journalism.

No longer are the Toffees the perfect target for an agent looking to tout his player’s services, as the money simply is not there anymore.

However, should an opportunity, arise, Sean Dyche perhaps could be tempted. Especially if it is to cement the signing of an old target, with Wilfried Gnonto now of long-term interest to the 52-year-old.

Having tried and failed to acquire his services in the summer, the Italy international has once again been touted with making the Merseyside switch.

Are Everton interested in signing Wilfried Gnonto?

Now, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Ben Jacobs has issued his verdict on the likelihood of a deal being struck again this January: ‘I don’t think that Daniel Farke could necessarily block anything because it’s obviously up to the Leeds hierarchy. But Farke will have a say.

‘My information is still the same in that – after the whole saga with Everton and even though that interest may not have gone away – Leeds are very intent on keeping Gnonto this window.

‘Given Everton’s 10-point deduction, subject to an appeal, a move might be quite risky if it became feasible. You get to the point where Gnonto would have to question who is more likely to be in the Premier League next season – Leeds or Everton.

‘It is probably still Everton because they’re not in the relegation zone and they might get their 10 points back, but you just don’t know.’

Why do Everton want to sign Wilfried Gnonto?

The reasons behind their persisting interest in Gnonto are numerous, given the many upsides he has to offer to a team even if his talents have been somewhat underutilised this season.

Having struggled behind a ferociously in-form Crysencio Summerville, the 20-year-old has been limited to just seven Championship starts, resulting in a disappointing return of just one goal and one assist.

However, in what was his debut year in England, the former FC Zurich ace did post an impressive eight goal contributions across all competitions, having lit up the Premier League with his dynamism and directness.

Although the £30m price tag touted in the summer might have been lofty, for the potential he boasts and the excitement he would bring, it might just be a move finally worth making.
