Everton fell to defeat at Goodison Park against Manchester City in a match where they took the lead, but there were positives to take.

Sean Dyche’s side went into the half-time break 1-0 up thanks to a smart goal from Jack Harrison, and The Toffees had performed valiantly against the Champions.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side fought back to win 3-1, with goals from Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva snatching three points for the visitors.

There were some excellent performers for Everton, with Jarrad Branthwaite outstanding again, whilst James Garner and Dwight McNeil also delivered strong displays, but the goalscorer Harrison particularly caught the eye.

Jack Harrison was excellent despite Everton defeat

The 27-year-old was a constant menace on the right-hand side before he was replaced in the 80th minute, as he made a huge impact in the final third.

He opened the scoring after an intelligent run into the box, and was found by McNeil’s delivery to slot home and send Goodison Park into raptures.

He could have added to the total as he fired in another shot on target, with a stunning outside-boot effort well saved by Ederson.

Harrison hit the target with both of his attempts and created a big chance for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in what was a very bright performance.

Dyche has found good balance in attack with this Everton side, as both McNeil and Harrison have delivered strong performances in recent weeks.

Both are playing as inverted wingers, and cutting inside onto their stronger foot, with Calvert-Lewin or Beto through the middle as a focal point.

This allows them to both create chances for their teammates, as well as offering goal threat themselves, and today’s goal was a good example of clever wing play and attacking movement.

Whilst it was a frustrating result overall, Everton gave a good account of themselves, especially in the first half, and Harrison was a big part of the home side’s bright display going forward.

Everton are just one point above the relegation zone, and Luton Town have a game in hand. With tough fixtures against Wolves and Aston Villa coming up, there may be some concern that The Toffees could slip into the bottom three, but the performances against Man City and Tottenham Hotspur gave a lot of encouragement that this side have a lot more quality and resilience than some of the other squads seen in recent years.
