There have been mixed reactions to the prospect of 777 Partners potentially completing a takeover of Everton, but their success at Serie A side Genoa may be of some interest given the similarities in situations at both clubs.

The US-based firm took over Genoa in 2021, and after initially suffering relegation, the club invested well, came back up immediately and are in a much better position than before, having enjoyed a reset since the takeover.

Genoa are one of many clubs owned by the group, that have already provided some funding with a deal potentially being completed soon following regulatory processes.

777 Partners impact on Genoa

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Italian journalist Fillipo Grimaldi revealed that Genoa fans have taken a shine to 777 Parners for what they have done since taking over their club.

“In a very positive way,” Grimaldi stated of the fans’ feelings on their owners.

“The Genoa fans came from almost 20 years of management which in recent seasons had provided little satisfaction. The arrival of the 777 Partners brought a positive atmosphere of renewal also because it was supported by the results.

“The 777 group arrived in Genoa in autumn 2021 and even though Genoa was relegated to Serie B that year, the following season they first managed the transfer market and the results arrived.

“They achieved immediate promotion to Serie A and, this year they have a decidedly more competitive team than the recent past. Now, there is never less than 32,000 fans at the stadium every home game. That’s never happened in the history of the club.”

Positive signs for Everton?

Whilst there are understandable concerns over a number of aspects of 777 Partners, Genoa can serve as an example to Everton.

Everton have been mismanaged from the very top for years, and despite a significant outlay in the transfer market, the lack of direction at the club has seen the squad heavily decline in quality, with players signed for different managers and styles now finding they have little use in the team.

The Toffees have battled relegation for the last few seasons, and this campaign is unlikely to be much different. However, if the new owners implement a strategy which could create a much healthier long-term position in spite of any potential relegation, then Everton could find themselves in a better state in a similar way to Genoa’s recovery.
