Everton could still get a reduced point deduction after the club confirmed they will appeal.
That’s according to Simon Jordan, who believes that the Toffees ‘may well’ still get a three to six point deduction following the outcome of their appeal.
It was confirmed this afternoon that Everton had been docked 10 points after they were found guilty of breaching Premier League financial fair play rules.
Everton were referred to an independent commission after it was revealed that the club had gone significantly over the maximum of £105 million loss over a period of three years, with clubs who break the profitability and sustainability rules facing consequences of a fine or deducted points.
Everton’s immediate 10-point deduction puts the club second bottom in the Premier League, two points from safety.
The Merseyside outfit aren’t bowing down to the punishment though, with the club putting out a statement that confirmed that they would be appealing the decision.
Simon Jordan has suggested his surprise by the significant deduction and admits they could still receive as few as three points.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I was told about six weeks ago that their expectation was they were going to get nine points but I didn’t think they would get that. That’s why I changed my argument from a financial situation to a points based one. I thought they would get three to six and that may well be the outcome after the appeal.
“But the fact of the matter is that they are a product of timing alongside the fact that I think they have been slightly artistic in their accountancy. The Premier League’s attitude now is that they have an independent regulator coming in and they want to be able to show they are able to clean house. Cleaning house means that they need to be able to enforce things like financial fair play and the disciplines around it.

“I wonder if this had been two or three years ago if Everton would have got the same situation but 10 points is a significant penalty and they will probably argue it down.
“They are going to get a points penalty, they are not going to be argue this away, and the whole fabric of this is much different to Man City’s.
“I thought there might be an element of the Premier League bottling it because the next cab off the rank is going to be Man City, so once you have set a precedent of points you have that in your armoury and you are going to use it again. Man City are going to be watching this with interest but the situation with Everton is much more binary, Man City is a much more convoluted set of cases.”
What does this mean for Everton?
Everton’s 10-point deduction is the biggest in the top flight’s history and one that most fans feel is very harsh.
The Premier League may be looking to set a standard going forward and are using Everton as an example, but like Simon Jordan says, there is going to be a huge uproar when it comes to Man City’s case if they aren’t served a significant penalty too.
But whether they can get their punishment reduced or not, Everton are only two points from safety.
The Toffees have picked up four wins this season – only one less than the other four bottom clubs have all together.
Sean Dyche has transformed this team and they look like they are massively on the up, so there is absolutely no reason why anyone should expect them to be doomed for relegation now. It is arguably the best time for them to receive a point deduction, though of course that doesn’t make it any easier.
