Everton’s transfers in recent history have been the outstanding factor in their financial restrictions, with PSR punishing them for such consistent failure.
Farhad Moshiri is the man responsible for such unrelenting misconduct, and only since he took a step back has the club finally started operating with intelligence again.
However, before his rule, the Toffees were renowned for their shrewd recruitment in the market.
In fact, one of the few reminders of that bygone era has just been named as one of the best Premier League signings of all time.
Former scout names Everton player as one of the best-ever Premier League signings
This marks a historic season for Everton, for many reasons.
Obviously, the outstanding one is Goodison Park-related, with this set to be their final year before moving homes into the Bramley-Moore Dock.
And whilst that will dominate proceedings, naturally, it would be a shame if any limelight was taken off what also might be Seamus Colemann’s final campaign in royal blue.
With Coleman having signed a one-year contract extension earlier this year, the writing is on the wall, and now a former scout of Everton’s, who actually spotted both him and Wayne Rooney many years before, had nothing but good things to say about the 35-year-old.
He told The Athletic: ‘He’s a great guy and great ambassador for Everton. He’s got me tickets for games and signed shirts for me. I was at a restaurant with my family shortly after he first signed. He came over and said hello to everyone and when I went to pay, he’d already sorted my bill.
‘A couple of weeks ago, my grandson signed for the academy and went round to Seamus’ house to get a shirt signed. He took him out to the back garden to kick a ball about. He’s just a great guy. I hope he’s with Everton for a lot longer.
‘To come to Everton from Ireland and do what he did is just phenomenal. Pound for pound, he’s got to be one of the best signings we’ve seen in the Premier League.’
Seamus Coleman remains an Everton legend
With 422 appearances and countless opportunities to leave for bigger clubs throughout his career, Coleman’s devotion to this football club knows no bounds.
And whilst he doesn’t have a trophy to show for his undying commitment, the legacy he is set to leave at Everton far outweighs what any FA Cup might have offered.
The measure of the man that Coleman is can be exemplified through the innumerable quotes referencing his quality of character, and even in the most basic of videos that detail him interacting with fans, his warmth shines through.
It’s ironic that he doesn’t think that way though, as he once noted: ‘Club legend? Not for me.
‘Because in my opinion, you have to have won something at a football club to be a club legend. I’ll be someone that has played three or four hundred games forever but club legend, not in my eyes.
‘I can go to bed at night knowing that I give everything for Everton Football Club and that is all I can ask of myself.’
Arguably, that humility only adds to his legendary status, and proves why he is so revered on Merseyside.
