A round-up of the latest Everton news as Sean Dyche learns of the Toffees’ potential punishment for a second breach of PSR and what ‘surprises and frustrates’ a pundit.

Everton could face a transfer ban for breaching PSR twice

An independent commission could now slap Everton with a transfer ban instead of a second points deduction for breaking the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR). That is according to the Liverpool Echo, which reports that the Toffees are preparing their appeal.

Everton fully intend to appeal their second charge for breaching PSR and are still awaiting an outcome for their initial appeal. The Blues are fighting to see their 10-point deduction issued in November overturned or reduced for recording £124.5m in losses over a three-year spell.

The Premier League initially charged Everton last March for exceeding the £105m limit from the 2019/20 to 21/22 seasons. But the division also ruled that the Goodison Park club were in breach from 2020/21 until 22/23. An independent commission is now reviewing the charge.

It is possible that the commission will issue Everton with a second points deduction for their second breach of PSR. But the Liverpool Echo claims that a transfer ban is also among the potential penalties. It would cause serious issues with the number of players out of contract.

Newcastle could step up their interest in Amadou Onana’s transfer

Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab are in talks with Newcastle United over the transfer of Miguel Almiron. That is according to The Telegraph, which adds that the Toon could use the money raised from his sale to advance their interest in the transfer of Everton star Amadou Onana.

Newcastle, like Everton are many Premier League clubs, are showing real caution over their spending in January due to PSR. But Magpies manager Eddie Howe is a fan of Onana and is in the market for midfield reinforcements. Yet Onana is currently above their financial limits.

Reports by TEAMtalk earlier this month noted that Everton have slapped a £70-90m price tag on Onana amid interest from Arsenal and Newcastle in his transfer. The Blues are loath to sell the 22-year-old, who has started in 16 of his 17 Premier League appearances this term.

Sean Dyche’s Everton side ‘surprises and frustrates’ Michael Ball

Everton ‘surprise and frustrate’ Michael Ball with how Dyche’s team often fail to make use of their attacking throw-ins. Ball believes the Toffees can make a ‘real impact’ in their fixtures if the Blues made better use of their throw-ins. He also considers it a ‘fine margin’ for success.

Ball has told the Liverpool Echo: “One thing that I have noticed is when one of these attacks leads to a throw-in in the opposition half, we very rarely make the most of it. This surprises and frustrates me.

“Throw-ins are a part of the game – we basically should be using this opportunity as a set piece. Yet far too many times we get one in the final third and the ball ends up back with Jordan Pickford, which lets the opposition reset again.”
