Longevity is an often underrated quality when discussing footballers.
Some players may burn brightly and briefly but it takes something special to last year in year out in the top flight.
Maintaining that quality and motivation at a club where expectations are as high as they are at Everton is not easy at all.
Below is a list of Everton’s top 20 appearance makers of all time, topped by Neville Southall, who is by far the Toffees’ most capped player.
Everton’s all-time top appearance makers
- Neville Southall – 751
- Brian Labone – 534
- Dave Watson – 528
- Ted Sagar – 497
- Kevin Ratcliffe – 493
- Mick Lyons – 473
- Jack Taylor – 456
- Peter Farrell – 453
- Graeme Sharp – 447
- Leon Osman & Dixie Dean – 433
- Tommy Eglington – 428
- Leighton Baines – 417
- Tim Howard – 414
- TE Jones – 411
- Wally Fielding – 410
- John Hurst – 404
- Gordon West – 402
- Colin Harvey – 388
- Phil Jagielka – 385
- Tommy Wright – 374
Dean used his appearances very productively, netting 383 times to be the club’s record goalscorer.
Of the team’s current players, Seamus Coleman is closest to joining this list – he’s currently on 310.
That means he needs at least another two Goodison Park seasons to have a realistic chance.
It doesn’t seem like anyone will get close to Southall’s record any time soon, underlining what an outstanding servant he was to the club.
