Former Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell has been axed by Rangers just months after signing Youssef Chermiti.

Everton take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday night, and Toffees fans have their focus firmly set on action at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, former Everton man Kevin Thelwell now finds himself out of a job.

Rangers have axed Thelwell as their sporting director, mere months after bringing him to Ibrox.

Thelwell departed Everton at the end of last season, but his move to Glasgow has not gone to plan.

Thelwell has come in for enormous criticism since his move to Scotland.

Rangers have endured a nightmare start to the season after questionable recruitment contributed to Russell Martin’s departure.

One deal attracted more attention than most, as Rangers signed Youssef Chermiti from Everton.

Thelwell brought Chermiti to Everton in 2023, but the striker failed to score in his 25 appearances for the Toffees.

Thelwell not only signed Chermiti again but paid £8million, rising to £10million for his signature.

Chermiti recently scored his first Rangers goal, but he has looked woefully short of what Rangers need.

Rangers fans have now taken to social media to ponder Chermiti’s future after Thelwell – his biggest supporter – was given the boot.

Some believe that Thelwell spending so much money on Chermiti should have put him in danger of the sack in the first place.

Others just hope that Thelwell lands a new job soon and takes Chermiti to his next club, paying similar money for him once again in the process.

Youssef Chermiti still has some hope at Rangers

Thelwell was certainly Chermiti’s biggest fan at Rangers, and his exit leaves the striker in a difficult position.

Chermiti’s transfer has been slammed, and some will wonder whether he has a long-term future at Ibrox.

The hope here is that the new Rangers boss, Danny Rohl, helps him improve.

Rohl has hailed Chermiti as ‘special’ in the early stages of his Rangers career, seemingly seeing real potential in the former Everton forward.

Few Rangers fans appear to see that promise, but Chermiti will now look to prove that he can be a Rangers success without Thelwell being involved at the club.
