Seamus Coleman has made his first Everton appearance of the season as he featured for the U21s today.

The defender suffered a serious knee injury back in May and there were initially concerns that his Everton career could have been brought to an abrupt end after 14 years on Merseyside.

However, the Toffees went onto extend Coleman’s contract by a further year as he continued his rehab at Finch Farm.

The ‘excellent‘ 35-year-old has been absent from Everton’s senior squad since he was sidelined in May, but he has now taken a huge step in his recovery after starting for the U21 side at Leigh Sports Village this weekend.

Coleman was named as Everton U21s starting right-back as they were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United, with the veteran lasting 45 minutes before he was taken off at half-time.

Coleman had been spotted in first team training last month, but the club confirmed last week that they would be cautious over bringing him back into the fold.

A statement on Everton’s official website read: “Coleman has resumed full training after overcoming a knee injury sustained against Leicester City back in May, however, manager Dyche says the full-back needs more time on the training pitch and match minutes having faced an extended period out.”

It’s unclear when exactly Coleman will return to the match-day squad, but we could expect to see him feature for the U21s in their Football League Trophy clash with Mansfield Town on Tuesday evening.

Can Seamus Coleman get back into the Everton XI?

With another international break approaching, Coleman could look to make his first team comeback towards the end of the month.

Seamus Coleman probably would have slotted back into Everton’s defence if he had made his comeback earlier in the season, however the team’s recent form may make it difficult for him to get back into the starting line-up.

The Toffees have conceded only three goals in their last five games and have looked a lot more reassured at the back in recent weeks.

It will be really beneficial for the likes of Ashley Young and Vitaliy Mykolenko to have some competition however, while Sean Dyche will be delighted to have some cover for his defence.
