Financial expert Kieran Maguire has spoken exclusively with Everton News about what Everton could accomplish in January.
Everton were hit with an unprecedented 10-point deduction last month after failing to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability.
The deduction pulled Everton right back into a relegation battle, which admittedly they look likely to escape fairly soon.
However, the next question on the minds of many is what will this mean for Everton in the upcoming transfer window?
To answer that query, we drafted in the expert view of football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

Kieran Maguire sheds light on what Everton can expect in January
We asked Maguire about the current state of Everton’s finances and whether some transfer activities will be on the cards in January.
He explained: “I think Everton will have a bit of flexibility when it comes to January, clearly they’re under scrutiny but the sale of Anthony Gordon last summer certainly helped and the sale of Richarlison the previous summer would have helped as well and they have shifted some players off payroll,” Maguire explained.
“The likes of Cenk Tosun and Gylfi Sigurðsson, they left the club in the summer of 23, so the wage bill has come down and there’s a bit of wiggle room, but not a lot.
“It’s a bit of a balancing act, but they can do things [signings] but they’ll be very mindful that they’re under scrutiny from the Premier League and other clubs and so on. So I am sure that whatever they do do, they will do with an eye on ensuring that they maintain themselves within the FFP limit.”
Everton’s latest transfer news
If Everton are to make some moves in January they will probably be on the cheaper side, to avoid stretching themselves too thin financially.
One name mentioned as a possibility is Lyon and Ireland defender Jake O’Brien who likely wouldn’t cost too much at all.
Another is Kasey McAteer of Leicester City who would probably cost slightly more but likely not too much.
If Maguire’s comments are to prove to be the case, we are sure there will be some movement for Everton fans to get excited by.
