Tom Davies was one of the stars of the show in Everton’s win at Anfield.
He bossed the midfield in some esteemed company as the Toffees picked up their famous victory.
That performance continued a strong recent run of form for Davies and in an exclusive interview, we asked former Everton goalkeeper Nigel Martyn what he’s made of the midfielder’s performances.
He feels Davies deserves all the plaudits coming his way and shared what’s impressed him the most about his displays.
“He’s been outstanding, hasn’t he?” said Martyn when asked about Davies’ recent performances.
“He’s shown what he’s about at times in his Everton career, he’s not – by his own admission probably – the most silky midfielder.
“But there are piano players and piano carriers as it was once explained to me – and your team needs quite a few piano carriers.
“You have your players, James Rodriguez, Gyfil Sigurdsson, who will win you games with bits of skill which go beyond what other people can do.
“But to have those kind of players you have to have others who will take on more of the workload and that’s Tom Davies.
“The system helps him as well, having three tigers in there. Davies is athletic, not blisteringly quick but he is fit and he goes for the full 90 minutes. Fair play to him. he’s rightfully receiving plaudits for his last few performances.
“He’s been up there, even in the game they’ve lost he’s still played well – which is what you want.”
When Carlo Ancelotti revamped his midfield in the summer transfer market, Davies might have wondered where that left him.
But Allan’s injury has handed him an opportunity to impress and he’s certainly grabbed it.
He looks to have found a role in the team and what a joy it is to have a local lad and academy graduate dominating the Merseyside derby at Anfield.
