Exclusive: Nigel Martyn says Everton don't need reported target Brandon Williams

Everton were linked with a loan swoop for Manchester United’s Brandon Williams last week.

As per the Athletic, Everton have emerged as genuine contenders to sign the Englishman until the end of the season.

In an exclusive interview with former Toffees goalkeeper Nigel Martyn, we asked him if he thought Williams would be a good signing.

He feels Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t really need him now, with Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne back from injury.

When asked if Williams would be a good signing this month, Martyn said: “Yes, as cover, probably, but he was needed a month ago!

“I don’t know if you need him really, if I’m being honest. Coleman and Digne are back.

“Holgate is there as cover, Godfrey is there as cover. They’ve got everyone back now.

“There’s already enough players in those departments, so possibly no (it wouldn’t be a good signing).”

As Martyn said, Everton have been able to get through the injury issues at full back with centre halves covering.

Holgate had experience of playing right back previously and Godfrey proved to be a revelation on the left of defence.

That made Everton harder to beat and saw them pick up form over a busy Christmas period.

Williams hasn’t been able to force his way into the United team very often at all this season and he would be unlikely to dislodge one of Everton’s first choice picks at either left or right back.

It will be interesting to see if the reported interest comes to anything, but Martyn clearly feels other areas are a greater priority.
