Fabrizio Romano: Everton are ‘monitoring’ teenage sensation ahead of January

Everton boast a rich history of youth production and promotion, with some of England’s greatest talents having been nurtured in Merseyside.

Whilst Wayne Rooney marks their outstanding export, even the likes of John Stones have reached unimaginable heights, having moved to Goodison Park from Barnsley as a youngster.

It seems that no matter the manager or the director of football, youth always finds a way of breaking through for the Toffees.

That therefore could explain their strength in the market when trying to tempt starlets to England, with the promise of a clear pathway should they perform.

In fact, Fabrizio Romano has detailed the latest update on their pursuit of another wonderkid, with Anton Matkovic the player in question.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable transfer guru would write: ‘Interest growing in 17 year old Croatian talent Anton Matkovic. NK Osijek striker, attracting important clubs from Europe – understand Everton are monitoring him. Also RB Salzburg and Sassuolo are interested, no time for decision yet but one to watch for sure.’

Who is Anton Matkovic?

As an unknown talent, there is admittedly little for Evertonians to get excited about initially with this deal for the Croatian forward.

However, in years to come, he could go down as part of the lengthy list headlined by those aforementioned names.

At just 17 years old this is certainly one for the future, but Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell will certainly be well-informed if they are to unload precious funds on youth.

Having only featured for NK Osijek’s U19s side thus far, already he is featuring at a level way above his age grade. Should he make the switch to England, it would be interesting to see how he might flourish for the U21s.

Given Everton‘s financial predicament, in which funds are expected to be extremely tight for now especially as they await the outcome of their potential 12-point deduction, investing in the future could be an intelligent move from the club.

By the time they come out of their financial hole, which the touted takeover from 777 Partners could help speed up, Matkovic could be ready to star as the spearhead of an outfit boasting renewed confidence.
