Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has now said that Chelsea defender Trevor Chalobah is likely to leave Stamford Bridge in January.

Indeed, Romano claims that the ‘race is open’ for the 24-year-old, who Everton were interested in signing during the summer.

It was reported in August that the Toffees were interested in the centre-back, alongside fellow Premier League sides Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

A move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich also appeared to be on the cards, however the deal fell through and the 24-year-old remained at Chelsea.

However, Fabrizio Romano has indicated that the defender will look to move on in January as he searches for first-team football.

Taking to Twitter, Romano said: “Both Chelsea and Trevor Chalobah expect to part ways in January as hope for English CB is to find more space and play on regular basis in 2024.

Discussions will follow after Bayern deal collapsed in August – interest remains but race is open to other clubs too.”

Everton need defensive reinforcements like Chalobah this January

Everton had to prioritise their attack during the summer transfer window, and recruited the likes of Beto in a £26m deal with Udinese and Youssef Chermiti in a £15m deal with Sporting CP.

However, the Blues could look to strengthen at the back in January, especially after losing some influential defensive figures, such as Yerry Mina who left as a free agent and Conor Coady, whose loan deal expired during the summer.

The return of Jarrad Branthwaite from his loan deal at PSV Eindhoven has seen the 21-year-old become a revelation at the back for Everton, putting in consistent performances for Sean Dyche’s side.

However, bringing in a player of Trevor Chalobah’s quality would be a superb addition to Everton’s defensive options, and the 24-year-old will likely get first-team football at Goodison Park.

The Toffees will no doubt face stiff competition for the defender, but as Romano says, the ‘race is open’ for the centre-back.
