Everton are apparently closing in on their first signing of the summer so far.

The goalkeeping situation at Goodison Park was under scrutiny last season and Robin Olsen came in on loan from Roma.

But he has gone back to Italy now and Rafa Benitez has replaced Carlo Ancelotti.

And the Spaniard has apparently secured the signing of Asmir Begovic from Bournemouth, according to respected journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Jordan Pickford was in and out of the Everton side last season, which means his England place was debated at length.

But his stunning European Championship, where he won the Golden Glove should see him return to Everton full of confidence.

Moreover, he should be the undisputed number one if he stays fit, regardless of Begovic’s impending arrival.

He’s an experienced goalkeeper and a good professional, who will provide cover for Pickford.

His career has taken him to Portsmouth, Stoke, Chelsea and Milan as well as Bournemouth.

That experience should allow him to settle in smoothly into the dressing room at Goodison Park.

Benitez will hope for more eye-catching signings before the end of the summer to bend the squad to his will.

His reign will likely get underway amid a backdrop of unrest anyway given his Liverpool connections.
